Kia Sportage – What you need to know

Which Sportage gives you the goodies you want, without spending a fortune?
The Sportage nameplate has been part of Kia’s line-up in Australia for many years but the current fourth generation model launched in 2016 is by far the most competitive offering yet. Little surprise the Sportage is on the list for many who are considering the purchase of a new mid-size SUV.
With a choice of three drivetrains and four trim levels there’s plenty to think about when choosing the Sportage that’s right for you. Let’s take a close look at the range.
The Sportage range starts with the entry level Si trim. Next up from there is the petrol only Si Premium followed by the SLi models. The best equipped are the Sportage GT-Line versions.
The Si entry model is priced from $28,990 (excluding on-road costs) and features the following standard equipment:
>> Rear parking sensors
>> Rear view camera
>> Automatic headlights
>> Cruise control
>> 7.0-inch touch-screen display
>> Android Auto / Apple CarPlay functionality
>> Bluetooth connectivity
>> 17-inch alloy wheels
>> Six airbags
>> Black cloth seat upholstery
Options are limited to premium and metallic paints. In fact, only the non-metallic ‘Clear White’ will avoid an extra charge of $520.
Safety and Driver Assistance
Safety wise, all Sportage trim levels include six airbags, a rear view camera and rear parking sensors as standard features. As usual, there’s a host of electronic aids looking after traction, stability and braking.
Stepping up a level, the Si Premium also adds front parking sensors and LED daytime running lights to improve visibility to other road users.
Latest generation safety technology can be had, but at a price. Autonomous emergency braking, forward collision warning, blind spot detection and lane departure warning are available, but only for the GT-Line trim requiring a minimum outlay of $43,490.
Also reserved exclusively for the GT-Line is Kia’s ‘Intelligent Parking Assist System’. With this handy feature the top-spec Sportage can park itself in reverse or parallel parking situations.
Comfort and Convenience
All Sportage models have a seven-inch touch-screen display, however the Si trim level is the only one to miss out on satellite navigation, along with automatic windscreen wipers and dual-zone air conditioning, which are standard on all other models.
Fully keyless entry and engine starting can be had if you opt for the SLi model. Although if you’re looking for the added convenience of keyless tailgate opening, the GT-Line is the only choice.
If the wish list includes a sunroof then the GT-Line is the only Sportage to fit the bill with its standard panoramic unit featuring tilt and slide functions and electric blinds. Also exclusive to the GT-Line are auto-levelling bi-xenon headlights and wireless phone charging capability.
Si and Si Premium models have black cloth seat trims. Upgrading to the SLi or GT-Line brings a plusher leather-appointed upholstery with a contrasting stitching.
SLi models have an electrically adjustable driver’s seat, while the GT-Line adds the same functionality for the passenger. Both front seats in the GT-Line also provide built-in heating and ventilation.
19-inch alloy wheels contribute to the sportier appearance of GT-Line models, an upgrade over the 18-inch rims on Si Premium and SLi Sportages.
Engine and transmission choices
The Sportage range offers three drivetrain choices:
>> 2.0-litre petrol, front-wheel-drive, automatic
>> 2.4-litre petrol, all-wheel-drive, automatic (GT-Line only)
>> 2.2-litre diesel, all-wheel-drive, automatic (+$5000 over 2.0 Petrol / +$2,500 over 2.4 Petrol)
Every Sportage model gets a six-speed automatic transmission as standard.
Petrol-powered Si, Si Premium and SLi models feature a 114kW, 2.0-litre engine and front-wheel-drive. The sportier GT line gets a more powerful 135kW 2.4-litre engine mated to a part-time all-wheel-drive system.
If you’re a diesel fan looking for sure footed, all-wheel-drive traction, rule out the Si Premium trim which is petrol and front-wheel-drive only.
For the other trim levels the all-wheel-drive diesel powertrain can be had for a premium of $5000 for Si and SLi models or $2500 more for the GT-Line.
